Upwork fee calculator

Upwork's freelancer service fee is a flat 10%: a $1,000 contract pays you $900, and a $500 milestone pays $450. Because the fee is a simple slice with no flat component, every target income maps to one clean number — target ÷ 0.9 — which the reverse mode above applies to any amount.

How the Upwork fee works

Upwork replaced its old sliding scale (20% / 10% / 5% by lifetime billings per client) with a single flat 10% freelancer service fee, so what you see is what every contract loses, regardless of size. The fee is calculated on each payment — each milestone or weekly billing — as it is released.

Clients pay their own marketplace and contract-initiation fees on their side. For freelancers the practical question is rate-setting: a $60/hour target income means billing about $66.67/hour, and a $2,000 project target means quoting roughly $2,222.

What Upwork takes from $10, $100 and $1,000

$10.00$1.00$9.0010.00%
$100.00$10.00$90.0010.00%
$1,000.00$100.00$900.0010.00%

Flat fees are why small payments lose the largest share: on a $10 charge the fixed part alone can outweigh the percentage. If your typical ticket is small, the effective-rate column — not the headline rate — is the number to plan around.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Upwork take from a $1,000 contract?

10% — $100 — leaving you $900. The fee is taken from each payment as it is released, milestone by milestone.

What hourly rate should I set to earn $50 an hour after fees?

$50 ÷ 0.9 = $55.56 per hour. Upwork keeps $5.56 and you keep $50.00. Reverse mode above works for hourly rates and fixed prices alike.

Does the 10% apply to hourly and fixed-price contracts?

Yes, the flat freelancer service fee applies to both contract types, and to bonuses paid through the platform.

Didn't Upwork used to charge 20% on small contracts?

It did — the old sliding scale charged 20% on the first $500 billed with each client. The current flat 10% replaced it, which is why older calculator results online often disagree with each other.
