Square fee calculator
Square takes 2.9% + $0.30 from an online payment — $3.20 on $100 — and 2.6% + $0.15 in person, which is $2.75 on $100. Pick how the payment was taken above; the calculator shows the fee, your payout and the effective rate for any amount.

How the Square fee works
Square prices by how the card is taken. Online payments through Square Online or an invoice cost 2.9% + $0.30. Cards tapped, inserted or swiped in person cost 2.6% + $0.15. Manually keyed-in card numbers are the expensive route and carry a higher rate, which is why Square nudges you toward tap and chip.
The in-person rate is why a café and an online shop with identical revenue keep different amounts: on $100,000 of annual sales the channel gap alone is worth several hundred dollars. If you sell in both channels, run the calculator twice with your actual mix.
Square rates at a glance
| Component | Percent | Flat fee |
|---|---|---|
| Square Online: Online processing fee | 2.9% | $0.30 |
| In-person (tap / insert / swipe): In-person processing fee | 2.6% | $0.15 |
Keyed-in (manually entered) transactions and some Square products price differently, and rates differ outside the US. Rates checked Oct 2026 — always confirm on Square's official pricing page.
What Square takes from $10, $100 and $1,000
| You charge | Square fee | You receive | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| $10.00 | $0.59 | $9.41 | 5.90% |
| $100.00 | $3.20 | $96.80 | 3.20% |
| $1,000.00 | $29.30 | $970.70 | 2.93% |
Flat fees are why small payments lose the largest share: on a $10 charge the fixed part alone can outweigh the percentage. If your typical ticket is small, the effective-rate column — not the headline rate — is the number to plan around.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Square take from $100?
Online: $3.20 (2.9% + $0.30), leaving $96.80. In person: $2.75 (2.6% + $0.15), leaving $97.25.
Why is Square cheaper in person than online?
A physically presented card is lower fraud risk than a card number typed into a web checkout, so the rate is lower — 2.6% + $0.15 versus 2.9% + $0.30. Manually keyed-in cards, which carry the most risk, are priced highest.
Does Square charge monthly fees?
The basic point-of-sale processing has no monthly fee; paid plans (for restaurants, retail and appointments) add subscriptions with their own processing terms. This calculator covers the standard pay-as-you-go rates.
What should I charge to receive $200 after Square fees?
Online, charge $206.28 — the fee is $6.28 and $200.00 lands in your account. In person, $205.49 covers the $5.49 fee. Reverse mode above confirms either figure to the cent.
