Marketplaces are not payment rails. Fiverr's 20% and Upwork's 10% buy you an audience, dispute handling and a storefront; Stripe's 2.9% buys you only the payment. Sellers who bring their own customers should compare processors and commerce platforms (PayPal, Stripe, Square, Venmo, Etsy, eBay) against each other — and treat marketplace fees as a marketing cost, not a processing cost.
Flat fees flip the ranking at small amounts. At $10, a processor charging 2.99% + $0.49 effectively takes 7.90%, worse than some headline rates that look higher. At $1,000 the same flat fee is a rounding error. There is no universally cheapest platform — there is only the cheapest one at your ticket size.
